How To Calculate Tiles Needed For A Floor

how to calculate tiles needed for a floor

We have put together a simple to follow guide. By the end of this guide you will be able to calculate exactly how many tiles you will need for your project.

Preparation

Firstly, you should take all measurements in metres. This will make calculating how many tiles you require a much simpler task.

Measuring a floor for tiles

The best way to measure a room for tiles is to draw a rough sketch of your floor space. The sketch must be large enough so that you can mark a straight edge with a dimension. Please see the example below.

Next, you should break the floor plan down into a series of squares or rectangles. This will then enable you to multiply the length and width of each individual square or rectangle together. Then all you need to do is add up the totals and get the desired answer required in square metres. Please see an example below.

The calculation for the above example here will be:

2.6m x 1.8m + 1.1m x 0.7m

Which equals: 4.68 sq.m + 0.77 sq.m = 5.45 square metres.

This is the total size of the space that you are looking to tile.

Cutting wastage

This next step is often overlooked and is crucial in ensuring that you don't run out of materials. It is essential to add between 10% and 20% above your calculation to avoid running out of tiles. This will ensure that after any cutting wastage you will still be able to finish your project.

Always remember that the larger the tile, the greater the wastage. Please follow this simple wastage allowance guide:

Tile Size Cutting Wastage Ammount
Up to 300mm x 300mm add an additional 10%
600mm x 600mm add an additional 15%
800mm x 800mm add an additional 20%

Using the above table and our previous example, if you had the 300x300mm tiles then you would add 10% on top of your original measurements.

  • 5.45 square metres x 10% = 0.545 square metres.

  • Add this to size of the space area: 5.45 + 0.545 = 5.995 square metres.

  •

Always round up to the nearest full metre, you would therefore need 6 square metres of tiles.
